Gin is the captain of the 3rd division of 13th team in Soul Society. Matsumoto is the vice captain of the 10th division of 13th team in Soul Society, her captain is Hitsugaya Toushirou. The first appearance of Gin and Matsumoto's relationship was told in chapter 129, which started with Matsumoto's dream. Her dream was about how Gin and her met. When they were young, Matsumoto fainted of hunger and Gin saved her. Then in chapter 132, Matsumoto prevented Gin from killing Hinamori. Gin was originally planning to hurt/kill Hitsugaya, but because of Matsumoto, he just gave up the idea.

Matsumoto stopped Gin's Zanpaku and told Gin that if he wants to continue fighting, she will be his opponent. Gin and Matsumoto herself knew very well that she was no match for him, but Gin just turned away and smiled. In my understanding, his smile was full of disappointments and sadness. He then disappeared. But before he went away, he said to Hitsugaya: "Rather than running after me, you should take care of the vice captain of the 5th division, look after her well." My understanding of the hidden meaning behind this is: go look after Matsumoto, which probably means that while taking care of Hina, it's Matsumoto can be looked after as well since she was injured.

After that event, Matsumoto was quoted thinking to herself: "Looks like the bad habbit of disappearing without telling me still hasn't changed. Gin... Just where... do you want to go...?" Yes, it's kind of sad. There are so many mysteries between these two's past and relationship, but it's clear that they care for each other. And due to each other's responsibilities and ambitions, they have to put their feelings aside.
